Style Model for my Front cover.

I have used this front cover from one of NME's editions to base my music magazine front cover on.
In one of my drafts i have used sufficient punctuation, however after later research into NME's front cover's I have noticed the lack in punctuation used in modern day magazines. With this information I have decided to change my draft and get rid of any punctuation i have used.

This is my front cover after i have removed all punctuation.

History of a music magazine
History
The paper's first issue was published on 7 March 1952 after the Musical Express and Accordion Weekly was bought by London music promoter Maurice Kinn, and relaunched as the New Musical Express. It was initially published in a non-glossy tabloid format on standard newsprint. On 14 November 1952, taking its cue from the U.S. magazine Billboard, it created the first UK Singles Chart. The first of these was, in contrast to more recent charts, a top twelve sourced by the magazine itself from sales in regional stores around the UK. The first number one was "Here In My Heart" by Al Martino.

Typical content

The typical content of a music magazine would include articles from music inspired people and photo shoots of popular bands\artists. The magazine is usually around 70 pages long and focuses on rock and guitar music. One of the first few pages there are news articles on recent events and music industry gossip. At the end of the magazine there are pages of advertisement, advertising upcoming music events.

Typical reader

There are 253,000 readers of NME, 153,000 of which are part of group ABC1 and 99,000 are of group C2DE. The age range of readers is quite broad and therefore isn't as usefully as others. 70% of the readers are male and 30% are female. The typical reader of NME would be those interested in the certain genre of music. The magazine focuses on guitar music and rock music. Those who play these instruments or enjoy listening to the genre of music would be the typical reader of this type of magazine.

House style

NME's house style layout is always very compact and busy. They include many images on their front cover, to look full and over flowing. It sometimes looks as though they can not fit everything on to the page. The NMW masthead is always located in the top left hand corner of the page. The language used on the front cover is very informal and chatty. They speak to the reader as though they are a mate, this relaxes the reader and makes the information more interesting.

This is my first draft Preliminary Front cover of a school magazine.

Thursday, 26 January 2012

I tried the idea of not looking directly at the camera and didn't feel it worked as well as the ones that did look directly at the camera. Also i felt the background detracted from the image of the model.
This was one of my other attempts at creating a mid shot for my preliminary. I would not use this image as the model isn't looking directly at the camera. However i do like the simple black background as it doesn't detract from the model.

I wouldn't use this image as there is too much going on in the background and would be hard for the reader to concentrate on the sell lines and headings.
This is the image i have decided to use for my preliminary task of a magazine front cover. I liked how the  model was looking directly at the camera and how the background is plain so doesn't detract from this. I also think the colours and lighting work well here.

         Good example magazine

The price of the magazine is clearly stated and placed in a red circular shape so that it catches the readers attention. However, cleverly the font is quite small, which could deter readers from seeing the price and refusing to buy the product due to the this.
The title of this school magazine is `The Kings School’. The font used is sans serif and  the colour used is quite plain and simplistic, however they do both stand out from the rest of the information on the page, outlining the contents of the magazine.
The smaller image and text on the right hand side of the magazine are an insight into what the contents of the magazine will be. The main image on this magazine, is the teenage boy, a long to mid shot. Maybe a student? This also helps the reader to establish what the text is about, as well as catching their attention when on sale. The use of the sell lines in capital letters, for example 'EXAM STRESS' instantly grabs the readers attention and draws them to this part of the magazine to find out what it will include or discuss inside. In the top right hand corner there is a logo of the school to indicate that the magazine is created by them. This helps the reader to establish the genre of the magazine.

Welcome to Annabelle's blog!
My preliminary task is to produce a front page and a DTP mock up of the contents page of a school magazine.
My main task is to create the front page, contents and a double page spread of a new music magazine.
Look out for my work!
Enjoy.
